“The agreement reached today prescribes standards that are both aggressive and attainable”
Congressional Democrats reached a compromise late Friday to boost automobile fuel economy by 40 percent, clearing the way for a House vote probably next week on an energy bill that Democratic leaders would like to send to President Bush before Christmas.
The agreement came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached an accord with Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., a longtime protector of the auto industry that dominates his home state, to ease the impact of the new fuel economy requirements.

“The American people expect us to work together to support our troops. That’s what they want”
President Bush sternly pressed Democrats to approve money to fund the Iraq war ‘without strings and without delay’ before leaving town for the Christmas holidays, something congressional leaders have already indicated they will not do.
After more failed attempts to pass legislation ordering troops home from Iraq, Democrats have said they plan to sit on Bush’s $196 billion request for war spending until next year.
Bush said this will push the Pentagon toward an accounting nightmare and affect the military’s ability to do its job protecting the country. Read more

“Even more shocking, McClellan confirms that not only Karl Rove and Scooter Libby told him to lie but Vice President Cheney, presidential Chief of Staff Andrew Card and President Bush also ordered McClellan to issue his misleading statement.”
Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan blames President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for efforts to mislead the public about the role of White House aides in leaking the identity of a CIA operative.
In an excerpt from his forthcoming book, McClellan recounts the 2003 news conference in which he told reporters that aides Karl Rove and I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby were ‘not involved’ in the leak involving operative Valerie Plame.
