“I believe the best way to make that decision is to look at the evidence. If you want to know what I’ll do as president, the best evidence is what I’ve done.”

With the governor of a key battleground state in tow, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton raced through the final weekend before Iowa’s high-stakes leadoff precinct caucuses urging activists to look past the primaries and back her because she can win in November.

Clinton and Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland stumped through vote-rich eastern Iowa making the case that the former first lady is best able to win back the White House and is ready to tackle the job once she does.

“The American people will have every right to be disappointed if the president vetoes this legislation, needlessly delaying implementation of the troops’ pay raise, the Wounded Warriors Act and other critical measures.”

President Bush plans to veto a sweeping defense policy bill on grounds that it would derail Iraq’s efforts to rebuild its country, the White House said Friday.

Bush’s action, which apparently caught congressional leaders off guard, centers on one provision in the legislation dealing with Iraqi assets. The legislation would permit plaintiffs’ lawyers immediately to freeze Iraqi funds and would expose Iraq to “massive liability in lawsuits concerning the misdeeds of the Saddam Hussein regime,” said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the Environmental Protection Agency on Friday that Congress would closely scrutinize its decision to reject California’s request to tighten rules on greenhouse gas emissions.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said she strongly disagreed with the agency’s rationale for the decision and would support an investigation by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. He is seeking all documents related to the state’s request for a waiver to implement fuel efficiency rules for vehicles that it says will work faster than the federal government’s. Read more
